Cockroaches come into your home in search of three things: food, shelter, and water.
They have also developed the ability to use even the smallest of openings as an entryway into your house.
They can come in through cracks in the exterior walls, vents, or even the gaps between walls and floors.
How to prevent cockroaches from invading your house:
-
Seal any cracks around your home.
-
Repair any water leaks.
-
Remove any sources of standing water.
-
Try not to overwater houseplants.
-
Wipe down your kitchen counters after every meal.
-
Put dirty dishes directly into the dishwasher or wash them immediately after using them instead of leaving them in the sink overnight.
-
Wipe down your stove after cooking.
-
Sweep daily and vacuum weekly.
-
Keep compost as far away from your home as possible.
-
Keep your garden neat and tidy.
SIGNS of a cockroach infestation:
Droppings - Roaches have surprisingly voracious appetites and will eat virtually anything, including human food, pet food, garbage, and dead skin cells. As a result, they tend to leave droppings wherever they go. Most roach droppings looks like coffee grounds or specks of black pepper.
You can find roach droppings:
-
On floors and counters
-
Behind and underneath kitchen appliances (toasters, fridges, microwaves)
-
In the corners of shelves and on hinges of kitchen and bathroom cabinets
-
Inside the pantry
You smell a musty odour - A single cockroach can produce this smell, but most people will not notice an odor until the roach population is quite high.
The smell is from secreted pheromones, droppings and dead and decomposing cockroaches.
